Join Greens SA State Parliamentary Leader Mark Parnell MLC to explore a vision for a sustainable future.
This exciting presentation will consider:
- Can we build cities that align with the ideals of the French Revolution: Freedom, Equality & Solidarity?
- If cities are the physical manifestation of our ideas, what would cities founded on these ideals look like?
Guest speakers are Steven Liaros and Nilmini De Silva, directors of PolisPlan, a town planning and strategic engineering consultancy. See www.polisplan.com.au for further information.
They will be arguing that striving towards equality would mean imagining a shift away from the current centralised city model - a capital city with sprawling suburbs and outlying districts - and imagining our cities instead as a connected network of local communities with no special centre of greater advantage. Striving towards freedom must include freedom from work and from debt. Reducing work to offer freedom would necessarily lead us away from infinite economic growth - a linear model - to an economic model that accepts both the growth and decay phases of the circle of life, thus aligning with the cycles of nature.
The presentation will include practical examples for implementation and a subsequent workshop hosted by Urban Ecology will be held for those who wish to explore these ideas further, on Saturday 28th November at 2pm. Further details will be available at the presentation.
